Priorities - Ain't Nothing Better

While reflecting in the silence of the temple I couldn't help but overhear an older gentleman with a walker remark that he did three endowments last Thursday. 

The younger man sitting next to him said with a look of surprise, "Three endowments?" 

In a very matter-of-fact tone, the older gentleman replied, "Ain't got nothing better to do." The whole room erupted in quiet giggles. 

My day had been consumed by calling clients for work, mowing the lawn, teaching some homeschool, and getting at least one load of laundry done. My initial reaction to the older gentleman's statement was to pass judgment that he was probably widowed, retired, and had little temporal responsibility in this stage of life. 

Further thought about the matter helped me realize that he was probably just like me in some ways. He probably sacrificed other other activities in order to serve in the temple that day. The older gentleman may have had a myriad of other things to do, but none of them were actually better, or more important, than being in the temple.  I realized that whatever gets made a priority, gets done. 

Let's put our family history work and temple work higher on the priority list this week. 

After all, you ain't got nothin' better to do.
