Bread Pudding from RS Christmas Party

We loved seeing you all at our RS Christmas Party on December 3. We wanted to share with you the recipe for the delicious bread pudding we enjoyed for dessert. Yum!

BREAD PUDDING

8 slices French bread 

8 slices white bread

1 c craisins 

4 c whole milk

1 stick butter 

1 c sugar

4 eggs 

2 Tbs vanilla

1 tsp fresh nutmeg

Sauce: 

1 c butter 

1 c sugar 

1 Tbs vanilla

1 c brown sugar 

1 c half/half 

Cut bread into bite size pieces. In a "Pam"ed 9x13 baking dish, layer bread and craisins. Melt butter, add the milk; pour over bread and let stand for 5-7 minutes. Mix sugar, eggs, vanilla and nutmeg to combine. Pour over bread mixture. With a knife, move the bread mixture aside to allow the egg mixture to be evenly distributed. Bake at 350 for 40-50 mins. In a sauce pan, mix all the sauce ingredients except for the vanilla. Bring to a simmer to dissolve the sugars. Remove from stove and add vanilla. Serve warm over pudding.

Faithful temple service offers one of the best opportunities there is to serve our fellow men and women in this life and to serve those who have gone beyond the veil. We are blessed beyond measure to be able to serve in the place that offers the ultimate protection from the storms of life. Thus the temple is a fortress and there we withdraw from the world in order to return to the struggles armed with the power to better deal with what the prophet Joseph Smith called the "vicissitudes of life."

Celebrating Our Roots...Something Extraordinary!

We loved seeing so many of you at our garden party earlier this month and we missed those of you who weren't able to come! It was a wonderful evening to spend time together and celebrate our roots as sisters in Relief Society. This is the video we had prepared and planned to share, before running into technical difficulties. We hope as we all find time to watch this video and we will all be reminded of our roots and all that we are capable of accomplishing together!

Garden Party Recipes

Here are some of the recipes for the delicious food we ate at our garden party earlier this month. Thanks to everyone who helped in the kitchen!

Wild Rice - Spinach Salad
1 package (10 oz) frozen spinach
3 cups cooked wild rice
1 1/4 cups cooked regular rice
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/4 cup sliced green onions with tops
4 slices bacon, cooked crispy and crumbled
Soy Sauce Dressing (see recipe below)

Rinse frozen spinach and drain. Mix spinach and remaining ingredients except dressing. Pour Soy Sauce Dressing over rice mixture and toss. Chill. Makes 8 servings, 265 calories.

Soy Sauce Dressing
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 Tablespoons vinegar
2 Tablespoons soy sauce
1 Tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Shake all ingredients in a tightly sealed container.

Chicken Salad
4 cups chicken, shredded or canned
3/4 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing
2 cups celery, diced
3 green onions, diced
3/4 cup apple, diced
1 cup dried cranberries
3/4 cup toasted pecans
Salt and pepper to taste.

Mix and enjoy!

Pasta Salad
12 oz bow tie pasta
12 oz rotini pasta

Cook, drain and rinse with cold water until cool.

Then, add:
2 20oz cans of pineapple tidbits
2 bunches green onions, sliced
1 package of grapes, cut in halves
6 stocks celery (chopped)
1 cup of dried cranberries

Mix all ingredients together.

Dressing
Mix 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon pepper, 3/4 cup of mayonnaise and 24 oz coleslaw dressing. Add this mixture to pasta mixture and combine.

Optional: add 1 cup of cashews before serving.

Keep refrigerated.

Just a reminder about the upcoming RS Birthday event, "Celebrating our Roots" on Tuesday, March 5. Join us for some delicious garden party fare, a fun service activity and a celebration of the wonderful organization we all belong to, Relief Society. We encourage you to bring a friend and especially your VT sisters. A nursery will be provided. We hope to see each of you there!

"Celebrating Our Roots"

As March is quickly approaching, our thoughts begin to let go of the lingering grays of winter and are renewed with the breath of fresh air that spring promises. Life begins to take root, building a foundation that is strong enough to endure all of the showers and storms that are ahead.

In March of 1842, the Relief Society was formed and began to take root. Our foundation was built on love and service for one another. There couldn't be a better time for a birthday celebration.

Please join us at the church on March 5 at 7:00 p.m. for a Garden Party as we "Celebrate Our Roots". This will be a great opportunity to get to know one another and extend a hand of fellowship to our friends and neighbors.

Don't forget to bring/wear shoes that "say something" about you. Also, we are starting a shoe drive at the activity. Please bring a pair of new or gently used shoes to donate to the Richardson Clothes Closet for RISD students.

ARE WE AND OUR NAMES TEMPLE READY?

In Relief Society we have divided the year into 4 areas of focus, plus an ongoing look at family emergency preparedness. We just focused on service the first quarter, through a spotlight on visiting teaching and “many hands make light work,” with an opportunity to not only serve each other, but our community.


This quarter we will focus on the Temple: "Temple Ready? Heaven Ready?" We just had a lesson on indexing and preparing names the temple by Sister Alford. This Sunday we will have a lesson on Temple Worship by Sister Grant. We will have an opportunity to take an Indexing Class, and a class on making your "Life Timeline"--a scaffolding tool for your Life History.


We will have A DAY AT THE TEMPLE – TUESDAY, JUNE 26, with special endowment and initiatory sessions, together as sisters. We have at least two sisters going through the temple for the first time, with an opportunity to go and support them. We have been given a new Ward Temple Day, the second Friday of the month with two sessions at 4 and 7 p.m. to hopefully aid attendance.


When I was a little girl about 9 years old, my father was Bishop of the Ward. One day I was riding in the car with him, and he said,”you know some people use the Church like a cafeteria or buffet dinner, picking and choosing what they will partake of, and what they will pass up. I want you to get a testimony of Jesus Christ, and partake of the whole buffet that the gospel offers to get you back to your Heavenly Father with your family.”


So many times, I have remembered that analogy by Dad and have surely seen the truth of it. Certainly, when we speak of the banquet that is ours in the Gospel of Jesus Christ –the temple is the dessert table. In the temple, Brother Boyd K Packer teaches, we are taught the “mysteries of godliness” and President Brigham Young said that in the temple we are “taught the signs and tokens that we will need to pass the angels, who stand as sentinels into the Celestial Kingdom.”


How sad if we go to the buffet table of the Lord, and do not see and partake of the magnificent array of desserts that the Lord has set for us in His Temples. Write the date Tuesday June 26th on your calendar! Do we have names Temple Ready? Are we Temple Ready? Are we Heaven Ready?

"WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER", AND WE WERE " REALLY" ALL PACKED INTO THE CULTURAL HALL TOGETHER.

Our Relief Society Presidency wants to thank all of you wonderful Sisters and Young Women for the tremendous turnout we had at our activity last evening. We fed well over 80 people including our "valiant" priesthood volunteers in the nursery.

A big thank-you to Bonnie Muir who supervised the food, to Natalie Marstella and Liz Rich who were co-chairs of the activity and planned all those fun crafts. To Amber Bateman, Kara Hall, Stephanie Manwaring, Katie Petersen, Alissa John , and of course Liz and Natalie again who brought their expertise to helped with the crafts.

We loved hearing from all the tables, the experiences you found in common - We are each different, yet as Sisters and Young Women, and Daughters of God - we have many things in common, and we need each other, oh, how we need each other!

We are so grateful to the Priesthood Quorums, who signed up to set up, take down, clean up and tend children - you are the best!

And lastly, thanks to all of YOU who brought your big smiles, your welcoming hugs and your lovely Spirits. We will post pictures soon.

Crafts for Sept 28

We are so excited for our upcoming activity 

"We're All In This Together" on SEPTEMBER 28 at 7PM.

• Below, you will see the crafts we are doing that night. We ask that you sign up for which craft(s) you want to do, but we will not be collecting any money until that night. Please bring exact change or a check (as we will not be able to provide change for large bills).
• If you invite your neighbor, friend, and/or a visiting teaching sister, please sign up for a craft for them so we will have enough supplies that night!
• You can sign up for crafts via the Sign-Up sheets (passed around in RS) or via email to dallas.fourth@gmail.com. 
• Keep in mind that we will only have 1 hour for crafts that night. 
• If you don't want to do any of the crafts, no worries! We still want you to come to the activity and enjoy friends, food, and fun!

HANDMADE BODY SCRUBS

 Large jar (above): $5
Small jar (below): $3
Plan on about 20 minutes per jar.

FLOWER NECKLACE

$5 if the Relief Society provides the fabric for you
$4 if you bring your own fabric (you will need about 1/4 to 1/3 yard of fabric)
Plan on spending about 25 minutes per necklace. If you bring your own scissors and hot glue gun, it will be faster.

TEMPLE MOLDS

$0.50 for the mold only
$1 for the mold on tile (above)
$3 for the mold on a gold charger (below)
$3 for the mold on a wire stand (not pictured)
Each mold will take about 10 minutes total

"We are all in this together"

Relief Society and Young Women of the Dallas 4th Ward are getting together for a combined activity. The date is Wednesday, SEPTEMBER 28TH at 7:oo p.m. We will start with a dinner, and then three Crafts will be available to do at a minimal cost. We started signups today on the crafts, and signups will be available for two more weeks. It is important to sign-up, as we will be buying supplies, and want to be sure we cover everyone who wants to do a craft. You may want to sit and visit, and that's okay too.

We asked today, for you to hang on to the little flag that was stuck in the apple you received. If you bring that little flag with you to the party - you have a chance to win a "valuable prize".

We have a few fun suprises for you too. So circle your calendar, if your assigned visiting teaching sisters have not been to Church lately, be sure and contact them - maybe offer a ride, so they will feel more comfortable coming. Also, be a missionary - if you have a friend or neighbor who would enjoy the fellowship, invite them out.

We are all here in the "second estate". Each of us is trying to live the gospel, be missionaries to those around us, and fulfill our callings as Visiting Teachers. Here is a quality event, where you can feel confident to bring people, but it will require a little extra effort on your part. I hope we will all make the effort, because "We are all in this together!"

"THE GIFTS THAT KEEP ON GIVING . . . ."

Sisters - our annual Relief Society Dinner Party is tomorrow night - Tuesday, December 7th at the Home of Shirlee Chaillet. It will start at 7:00 p.m. with a wonderful dinner, followed by an activity of "adult show and tell."

Parking is a challenge, so call the sisters on your visiting teaching route, or those we miss at church, and let's come together, and reduce the number of cars.

Bring a gift you have been given, and treasured over the years, and please be prepared to take a "quick minute" to tell all the sisters why it means so much to you. (You do get to take the gift back home.!)

The greatest gift we have ever received was from our loving Heavenly Father - the gift of the Christ Child -The Savior of the Word - Our Redeemer. Let's celebrate His birth together.
